An avowed modernist with extensive training in both architecture and landscape architecture, Michael Gottschalk today heads an award-winning international design practice. His projects are distinguished not only for their singular contemporary esthetic, but also for their thoughtful integration with their environment.
Based in Vancouver, B.C., Gottschalk designs five-star hotels, boutique resorts and upscale homes for clients worldwide. Many of his best-known and most acclaimed projects are in the rarefied resort of Whistler, where his residences are renowned.
One reason for his success is his keen attention to factors such as view corridors, vistas and the movement of sunlight and shadow throughout the seasons. All are primary considerations from the inception of a project. As Gottschalk explains, "I'm conscious of where a residence will be placed and what we want to draw from the environment for it. We don't want to compromise either the land or the space. The home becomes almost a living part of the environment."
